To me the meanest flower that blows can give
Thoughts that do often lie too deep for tears.
William Wordsworth – Intimations of Immortality, 1807

Along with Samuel Coleridge, Wordsworth (1770-1850) is credited with founding English Literature’s Romantic Age. He was the country’s Poet Laureate from 1843 until his death.

  1. I imagine preening and grooming would be especially important in freezing, wet weather. Great Wordsworth quote and nice to see him mentioned. Too often he appears to be overlooked and made fun of as a laughable old fellow wandering the lakes district whereas he was so much more! I think of him more as a nature poet but probably because l’m not really a romantic! Dangerous thing to admit on valentine’s day! Thanks as ever.
